LEARN HOW TO
DEAL
WITH
TENSION
Bring your authentic self to
your acting work
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
There are two sides to an actors craft. The first is what most actors would call their craft. It involves the technique of scene study, text analysis, knowing how to rehearse, audition and perform in front of the camera or on stage.
The second half, and equally as important as the first, is about your instrumental availability. It speaks to your ability to be open, authentic and reactive in your performance. Instrumental work will also address how to warm up, deal with nerves and honestly fulfill your scenes emotional obligations.
Many actors will say they understand the value of this work, but in my experience, ninety percent of actors do not properly work this aspect of their craft. That's probably because few truly know how to work their instrument. I sometimes will joke that many film actors consider on set craft services to be their warm up routine, but unfortunately I think there is more truth than jest in this.
A good handle on instrumental work will give an actor greater command of their ability to fulfill the scenes various obligations. It will also allow the actor to work from their core 'authentic' selves, which will create a more open, connected and instinctive performance.
